Does Insurance Cover Braces in Texas?

Dental insurance can take a real bite out of the cost of braces — but only if your plan includes orthodontic coverage, and the details vary a lot from one policy to the next. Here’s how to figure out where your plan stands, and what to do if your coverage falls short.

The Short Answer

Most dental insurance plans in Texas include an orthodontic benefit, but coverage varies widely. Some plans pay 50% of treatment up to a lifetime cap. Others limit coverage to children only or come with a waiting period. A few don’t cover orthodontics at all.

The only way to know exactly what your plan covers is to verify your benefits before treatment begins—something we do for free at A Perfect Smile Orthodontics.

How Orthodontic Insurance Usually Works

Orthodontic benefits work a little differently from the rest of your dental coverage. Here’s what to look for in your plan:

  • Lifetime maximum, not annual. Most plans cap orthodontic coverage at a lifetime dollar amount per patient, typically between $1,000 and $2,500. Once that cap is reached, the benefit is used up.
  • Percentage-based coverage. Many plans pay 50% of treatment up to the lifetime maximum. A $2,000 benefit on a $5,500 treatment plan means the family covers the remaining balance.
  • Age limits. Many plans only cover dependents under age 19. Some plans do include adults, but adult orthodontic coverage is less common.
  • Waiting periods. A few plans require you to be enrolled for 6 to 12 months before orthodontic benefits kick in.

What About Medicaid and CHIP in Texas?

Texas Medicaid and CHIP cover orthodontic treatment only in cases that are medically necessary—typically severe, handicapping malocclusions where the bite issue impacts health or function.

Cosmetic alignment isn’t covered. If you think your child may qualify, an orthodontist can help document the case for review.

What If You Don’t Have Insurance—Or Coverage Falls Short?

Most RGV families either don’t have orthodontic insurance or find that their benefit only covers a portion of the total treatment cost. That’s where flexible payment plans come in. At A Perfect Smile, we make braces affordable with:

  • Monthly payments as low as $99
  • Down payments as low as $399 (or $199 with insurance)
  • In-house, interest-free financing
  • No credit check required
  • A $500 OFF limited-time special

We’ve helped families across McAllenMissionEdinburgWeslaco, and Pharr fit treatment into their budgets—with or without insurance.
