Braces Covered By Medicaid?

bracesQuite often we have people contact us to see if we accept Medicaid to cover braces. The question isn’t really if we accept Medicaid – but are braces covered by Medicaid. Unfortunately Medicaid does not cover orthodontic treatment anywhere in Texas.

Up until 2012 Medicaid use to cover braces. In 2012 this all changed and Medicaid no longer covers braces unless it was deemed a medical necessity (such as for complete handling of a cleft palate or other actual medical condition). For 99.9% of the Texas population, Medicaid does not cover the cost of braces.

The truth is that braces really aren’t a luxury when someone needs them. If you or someone in your family has a situation of teeth not being well aligned and straight, this can not only affect their bite and jaw position, it can also adversely affect their self-esteem and confidence and make life that much more difficult.

The good news is that we offer interest-free financing with a low downpayment and low monthly payments. This can put much needed braces into reach for everyone.

Anyone can come in for a FREE CONSULTATION where we do all needed x-rays and Dr. Taylor, our Board Certified Orthodontist, will examine you. You will get an exact treatment plan. We can work with you on the financing to make it possible for you to start your treatment now and pay for it with low monthly payments that are spread out.

We also offer many options is straightening your teeth, including Invisalign and Clear Braces.

Call Us NOW to schedule your complimentary consultation!

What is a Board Certified Orthodontist?

board certified orthodontistA board certified orthodontist is an orthodontist who has studied and performed hundreds of additional hours to fully demonstrate the judgment, skills and knowledge required for providing orthodontic services at the highest level of patient care.   They have achieved board certification through the American Board of Orthodontics, the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the American Association of Orthodontists. The chart shown here is from the American Board of Orthodontics.

An orthodontist has not only fully trained as a dentist, including having completed a graduate program in dentistry to receive their DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), but they have also done a competitive residency at a Commission of Dental Accreditation (CDA) approved orthodontic program for an additional 2-3 years to be trained specifically in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. And a board certified orthodontists must renew their certification every 10 years to demonstrate their continuous commitment to excellence.

Achieving board certification is the final step in a years long and intensive education to ultimately be able to provide the highest quality service to patients.

Orthodontics is more than just straightening teeth.  Orthodontists understand the complexity of growth development and facial form.  Treatment plans include issues related to the jaw and bite, not just movement of teeth.  There’s a reason orthodontists go to additional years of highly competitive orthodontic school – to learn and perfect their ability in this specialty.  A general dentist is ideal for providing regular oral health check-ups, comparable to your family doctor.  Many dentists offer orthodontic treatment plans, but they do not have the extensive training or education in the area that an orthodontist has.

Although many Dentists offer braces, only 5% of Dentists are Orthodontists, and only 1% have completed their board certification exams to become a Board Certified Orthodontist.

Orthodontists are uniquely qualified in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems.  They dedicate their professional lives to creating healthy, beautiful smiles in children, teens and adults. Well-aligned teeth are more than attractive: they make it possible to bite, chew and speak effectively. Orthodontic care is often part of a comprehensive oral health plan.

Dr. Taylor has dedicated himself to providing our community with the best in orthodontic care, and is proud to share his qualifications with you.  He attended dental school, then specialized in orthodontics, and underwent the vigorous process to become a Board Certified Orthodontist. What is an Elite Provider of Invisalign?

Invisalign Elite ProviderDr. David Taylor is an Invisalign® Elite Provider. However most people don’t really know what that means. While every dentist or orthodontist who offers this revolutionary treatment is trained by the makers of Invisalign® to become a certified provider, there are different doctor designations based on overall experience and success.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably considering Invisalign for straightening your teeth and improving your smile. An equally important part of your decision is who will provide your treatment, guiding you through the process and ensuring success.

Elite providers are in the top 5% of providers as designated by Invisalign. Elite Providers have been working with the Invisalign product for a long time, with at least 300 lifetime patients treated. It is the highest level of achievement for Invisalign providers.

Reasons to Choose an Invisalign Elite Provider

Significant Invisalign experience under their belt.

It’s simple—if you want your orthodontist to be the most experienced Invisalign provider available, then you should choose one with Elite Provider status. These professionals are given this designation only if they meet the experience requirements. Elite Providers make up only 5% of all Invisalign providers in North America.

Elite Providers have received the best Invisalign training.

Only an orthodontist who has completed Invisalign training is qualified to determine whether or not Invisalign treatment is right for you. Dr. Taylor has committed many hours of education on the use of Invisalign technology to ensure you receive the best quality service.

Invisalign Elite Providers can treat more complex cases.

Because of the extensive experience they have acquired, Elite Invisalign Providers are able to treat moderate to complex orthodontic cases using Invisalign’s clear removable aligners. The Elite status means these providers are qualified to plan for even complex tooth movement.

Elite Providers put their long-term experience to work for you. Keep in mind that for some Invisalign patients, particularly for more complex cases, other orthodontic treatments may be required in conjunction with Invisalign. The Elite Providers know how to move teeth, guide the jaw and improve the bite for a healthier mouth—not just how to apply Invisalign.

An Invisalign Elite Provider  results.

Because Elite Providers are experienced, potential patients will be able to see pictures of other patient’s successes. Even some of the Smile Team or the orthodontists themselves may be currently wearing, or have worn, Invisalign before! Also, an Elite Invisalign Provider will be able to tell you how many patients they have treated.

Remember, you are not purchasing Invisalign. You are buying orthodontic expertise that will use Invisalign. The orthodontist’s level of experience is essential to your smile satisfaction. Elite Providers have achieved a significant level of experience in treating patients with the Invisalign system.

Clear Braces – A Great Braces Option

clear bracesStraightening your teeth has so many great options that really anyone can have a beautiful smile without much suffering. It use to be that one had to deal with the slow form of torture often referred to as “metal mouth” for a couple of years to get your teeth straightened. Now we have many incredible options.

Invisalign has been a leader in the concept of invisible braces clear-alignersintroducing a new way to straighten your teeth using a series of clear aligners that gradually moved your teeth into place. You take the trays out to eat, brush your teeth and put them back in. Invisalign gets great results and can handle most teeth alignment problems. The best thing about the Invisalign treatment is that it’s almost impossible to tell that you are wearing them.

However some people have had a concern that they may lack the discipline to wear the aligners for the required minimum of 22 hours per day. Or they don’t like pulling them out to eat and having to go brush afterwards each time. Or there may be other considerations or concerns.

Clear Braces – The New Kid on the Block

There’s a relatively new option in teeth straightening that not everyone knows about, and that’s CLEAR BRACES!

We have been providing Clear Braces to many patients in the Rio Grande Valley, here at A Perfect Smile Orthodontics. You can see how they look in the larger photo at the top of this post. Clear Braces are almost invisible. Now you can have regular braces but without the metal. Although they are clear braces, they are just as strong. They don’t get discolored and are easier to keep clean than traditional braces. You can read more about Clear Braces here.

A Perfect Smile Orthodontics offers easy payment plans with monthly payments as low as $99 per month.

Mcallen Texas Braces – Can you get braces if you have missing teeth?

braces and missing teethOur Ortho clinic in McAllen Texas specializes in braces and Invisalign. A not uncommon question that comes up is whether someone can get braces even though they have some missing teeth.

The answer is Yes. When teeth are missing, adjacent teeth will often drift into the empty space and this can lead to some real problems. Orthodontic treatment will correct and prevent these problems from happening or correct problems that may have happened as a result of missing teeth.

Here at A Perfect Smile Orthodontics in McAllen Texas, we offer a free consultation so that you can be sure, but in general missing teeth is actually a great reason to consider braces. We can help!

Call us at 956.630.6166 to Schedule

We are open on Saturdays!

If a patient is missing teeth, we have options as to the best way to treat this problem. In some cases, it may be possible to use braces to simply close the gap that has been created by a missing tooth. This may be a great option for someone particularly if they are already dealing with overcrowding. In certain cases where one or more teeth are missing, orthodontics can partially or completely close the spaces left by these teeth. This can reduce or eliminate tooth replacement costs for the patient after orthodontics.

If the missing tooth really does need to be replaced, braces can be applied in such a way as to leave room for a restoration in the future. If the space isn’t wide enough for replacing, braces can be used to widen the space so that there’s room for the addition of an implant or bridge. If there’s already plenty of space available for a dental restoration, braces can be used to hold that area open so that the surrounding teeth don’t move in on the open space (if that would not be detrimental to your overall bite).

Orthodontic treatment can help patients who are missing teeth and improve the health of their teeth and gums. Braces are recommended for patients with overcrowded or misaligned teeth. For patients who have experienced tooth loss, the missing teeth may actually be what is causing their alignment problems due to the surrounding teeth shifting locations.

If you are missing one or more teeth, Dr. Taylor will take this into account when applying your braces. If a missing tooth is going to be restored, the space may need to be widened to make room. In other cases, the space may need to simply be maintained. Or in some cases, braces can be used to simply close the gap with the existing teeth. Dr. Taylor will determine what is best.

This means that not only can braces help alignment issues in patients with missing teeth, they are actually beneficial to a patient in many ways. Braces can align the surrounding teeth properly, close any small gaps between teeth, open up the space left by a missing tooth to make room for restoration, and prevent surrounding teeth from moving into the space left by the missing tooth. Braces can actually help prevent many other problems that could occur if not treated.

Does Medicaid Cover Braces in McAllen Texas?

does Medicaid cover bracesQuite often people wonder whether or not Medicaid will cover the cost of braces for children or adults. For several years this was the case, but after spending over 700 million just for braces alone in Texas from 2008 to 2011, this all changed.

For the last couple of years, Orthodontics (braces) are no longer covered by the CHIP/Children’s Medicaid program or Medicaid for Texas, including McAllen, Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley. The only exception to this is if there is a severe alignment problem where health is threatened, such as a cleft palate which requires surgery and braces as part of the treatment.

For children enrolled in Medicaid, the dental coverage ranges from relief from pain and infection to regular checkups. States must provide orthodontic services to children “to the extent necessary to prevent disease and promote oral health, and restore oral structures to health and function.”

Here’s a quote from the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) manual:

“Orthodontic services for cosmetic purposes are not covered.”

If Medicaid is not an option – What to do?

Without help from Medicaid, we understand that you need excellent options and here at A Perfect Smile Orthodontics, we offer in-house, very low interest financing that means braces can cost as little as $99 a month.

We also offer a no-cost consultation here at A Perfect Smile Orthodontics where Dr. Taylor will check out you or your child’s teeth and determine if you will benefit from braces or other orthodontic treatment..

Many PPO insurance plans offer some orthodontic benefits. The amount covered by insurance varies depending on the insurance plan. If your insurance plan does not cover the full amount for affordable braces, we offer no-interest financing and low monthly payments to make the balance affordable. To find out if you or your children can benefit from affordable dental braces just call us and schedule a FREE CONSULTATION and we will work with you to find solutions that work for you.

Some Gnarly Teeth Transformed!

gnarly teethSome people wonder if Invisalign can be used to straighten more severe situations, including what someone might even refer to as some very gnarly teeth! I think when you see this video you might be amazed at what Invisalign can do. We have very successfully used Invisalign to address and handle some very misaligned teeth with resultant beautiful smiles.

What’s great about Invisalign is that it can do all of this without having to go through the unsightly experience of traditional braces, otherwise often referred to as “metal mouth”. Once you get used to talking with the aligners in place, using Invisalign is practically undetectable and most people won’t ever notice you are wearing the clear plastic aligners.

But real success with Invisalign does take discipline and commitment. You need to wear the aligners 22 hours per day. Each time you eat you take them out to eat, then brush your teeth and the aligners when yo are done and put them back in. And we’ve even heard several reports of some weight loss due to curtailed snacking as it is too much trouble to have to go brush your teeth every time you want to pop a few potato chips.

However, keep in mind that Invisalign is not your only option for straightening your teeth without the metal braces. We also offer Clear Braces as another solution to the problem!

Clear Braces are designed to provide patients with more attractive, less evident alternatives to metal braces. Clear braces provide the same benefits as metal braces, except they’re clear! They are made of clear materials, making them less visible than metal braces, while also being strong and resistant to staining. This is also a resource to address nearly all misaligned teeth scenarios, including some very gnarly teeth.

Of course traditional braces are a tried and true method of straightening your teeth and this is also always an option. But the point is, that there are options and we can handle any situation – even the gnarliest of gnarly teeth!
