The City of Pharr is unique because it is where three different eco-regions meet. It is a sub-tropical habitat where the Chihuahua Desert, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Plains join. This area is a wonderful place to see thousands of different migratory birds throughout the year. That’s because it serves as both a north/south and an east/west route for many birds and butterflies.
Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful place to stop in for some excellent birding just about any time of day. Established in 1943, this refuge offers habitat protection for birds and butterflies. It’s also home to the ocelot, an endangered, small, spotted cat that resembles the bobcat.
The Ocelot once roamed throughout much of Texas and Louisiana. Now, however, because of its shrinking habitat, you can find the Ocelot only in the far southern tip of Texas. This precious area houses so many different species of wildlife that it is known as the “Jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System.”
Pharr is also home to the international bridge that connects Texas to the Mexican city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas.
