What to Expect at Your First Orthodontist Appointment

Not sure what happens at an orthodontist consultation? Here's exactly what to expect at your first visit — from the exam and X-rays to your treatment options and cost conversation. No surprises, no pressure.

Most people walking into their first orthodontist appointment aren’t sure what they’re walking into. And that uncertainty is usually what keeps them from booking in the first place. Here’s exactly what happens, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.

It Starts with a Conversation

Before anything else, you’ll sit down with a member of Dr. Taylor’s team to talk through your goals, any concerns you have, and a bit of your dental history. There’s no pressure and no rush. This part of the visit is just about understanding what you’re looking for and making sure we have the full picture.

X-Rays, a 3D Scan, and a Clinical Exam

Next comes a set of digital X-rays, a 3D iTero scan, and a clinical examination. Together, these give Dr. Taylor a complete picture of your teeth, jaw alignment, and bone structure — things a visual inspection alone can’t show. This part of the visit is quick and comfortable, and the whole consultation typically wraps up in about 45 minutes.

A Recommended Treatment Plan

Based on the exam, Dr. Taylor will walk you through what he recommends and why. For most patients, this means a conversation about your options — traditional braces, clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign — along with realistic timelines and what each involves. The recommendation is based on your specific case, not a one-size-fits-all answer.

The Cost and Payment Conversation

Before you leave, you’ll have a clear picture of what treatment costs and what payment options are available. A Perfect Smile Orthodontics works with most major insurance plans and offers flexible financing so that cost doesn’t have to be the reason you wait. Nothing gets glossed over; you’ll leave knowing exactly what to expect financially.

No Commitment Required

A consultation is just that — a consultation. You’re under no obligation to start treatment that day or even that month. Many patients take a few days or a few weeks to decide. You’ll leave with a clear plan and a good understanding of your options. The decision is entirely yours, on your timeline.

What to Bring

  • Your dental insurance card, if you have one
  • Recent X-rays from another office, if you have them
  • A parent or guardian if the patient is under 18
