Braces for Adults: How to Decide If Treatment Is Right for You
It’s never too late to straighten your teeth. Here’s how to weigh your options — metal, ceramic, and Invisalign — and decide whether adult orthodontic treatment is right for you.
We hear this question from most prospective Invisalign® patients: “How long will Invisalign actually take?” It’s a fair question. You want straight teeth, but you also want to know what you’re signing up for.
The honest answer is: it depends. But for most patients here in the Rio Grande Valley, treatment runs somewhere between 6 and 18 months. Here’s what shapes that timeline and what you can do to stay on track.
Most cases at our McAllen practice fall into one of these ranges:
These are general estimates. Dr. Taylor will give you a much clearer picture after your free consultation, once he’s evaluated your teeth and bite.
No two mouths are the same. Here are the factors that play the biggest role in how long your Invisalign journey lasts:
Simple gaps or mild crowding respond faster than significant overbites, underbites, or rotated teeth. The more movement your teeth need to make, the more aligner trays are involved. And more trays means more time.
This one is entirely in your hands. Invisalign only works when your aligners are in. The standard recommendation is 20–22 hours per day. Taking them out for meals and brushing is fine; leaving them out for hours at a time is not. Patients who hit that daily wear window consistently tend to finish on schedule. Those who don’t often add weeks or months to their treatment.
Teens and younger adults tend to see slightly faster tooth movement than older adults. That said, Invisalign works well across all ages—we treat plenty of adults in their 30s, 40s, and beyond who finish treatment well within their projected timeline.
Regular progress appointments help Dr. Taylor ensure your teeth are tracking correctly and that you’re moving to the right tray at the right time. Skipping or delaying these visits can slow things down if a correction is needed.
Here’s what the typical Invisalign experience looks like from start to finish:
Many times, Invisalign and traditional braces take about the same amount of time. Braces can sometimes have an edge on very complex cases because they’re fixed to the teeth and apply continuous pressure. But for mild-to-moderate cases—which describe most of our patients—Invisalign moves teeth efficiently and often on a similar or faster timeline, especially when patients wear their aligners consistently.
If you’re not sure which option is right for you, our Invisalign vs. Braces comparison pages break it down separately for teens and adults.
The number one thing that extends Invisalign timelines is inconsistent wear. Here’s how to protect your timeline:
The only way to get an accurate timeline is to have Dr. Taylor evaluate your case in person. As a Gold Plus Invisalign Provider, he’s treated hundreds of patients across McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley and can give you a clear picture of what to expect before you commit to anything.
